WS Atkins sold for £2.1 billion

Words: Huw Morris

Leading UK design, engineering and planning consultancy WS Atkins has been sold for £2.1 billion to Canada’s SNC-Lavalin.

Atkins is a major player in the planning consultancy market, declaring fee income from planning activities of more than £45 million last year. It employs nearly 500 planning staff.

Atkins is currently working on some of the UK’s largest infrastructure projects including the new Hinkley Point power station and London’s Crossrail scheme.

The deal will see Atkins become part of a global £7.1 billion colossus offering “integrated professional services and project management company with 53,000 employees”.

The Canadian engineering and construction giant, which has offices in more than 50 countries, had been in talks with Atkins about a takeover for the past month.
