Proposals for a 2,000-home eco-community near Waterford are under consideration according to reports in the Irish press.

The development, earmarked for land at Kilbarry south of the city, would be "Ireland's most sustainable urban development”.

In prospect is an experimental carbon-neutral initiative where “homes will come with solar panels and cut-price electric cars”, the Irish Independent has revealed.

The scheme includes proposals for a solar farm. Homes would be nearly zero-carbon and would be fitted with solar panels.

A spokesperson for Waterford City and County Council (WCCC ) told the Irish Independent the council was "supportive of the Kilbarry Sustainable Community pilot and while not direct funders of the project, WCCC is keen to see the project progress".

Irish energy company ESB is said to be supporting the proposals, which have secured funding from the Saudi Arabian investment group Fawaz Alhokair, according to the newspaper.
