Urban Village work begins

Words: Laura Edgar

Work has begun on the first dedicated workspace for creative industries in Wales.

The Creative Cluster, in Swansea’s High Street, is part of Coastal Housing Group’s £25 million Urban Village regeneration scheme. The 30,000 sq ft development has six floors and will provide an affordable and cutting-edge hub for small and creative independent businesses and the performing arts.

R & M Williams, based in Cardiff, are carrying out the work, which has an expected completion date of summer 2015.

Gareth Davies, Coastal Housing Group’s director of development, said: “The Creative Cluster will be the centrepiece of the scheme, providing a community-centred work environment which will allow like-minded creative individuals to come together and build a thriving creative quarter in Swansea.”

Darryn Parry, managing director at R&M Williams, added: “We are delighted to be engaged by Coastal Housing on the Creative Cluster, which forms the last piece of a very significant jigsaw.

“The final stage of this exciting project is a particularly challenging due to the constraints of the site, but once complete it will transform a unique part of Swansea’s historical past into a vibrant hub for both creative industries and starter business.”

The first phase of the housing group’s flagship scheme for Swansea’s regeneration was completed in spring 2012.
