The Trump Organisation is working up a major expansion of its Turnberry golf resort with proposals for a new 'world class coastal retreat' .

This would see hundreds of private houses, flats and retirement villas built at its world-famous but loss-making facility in South Ayrshire.

Proposals would also include leisure facilities and shops. They are earmarked for nearly 50 hectares of farmland to the north of the resort’s Ailsa championship course.

According to a 15 page document seen by Scotland on Sunday the company is proposing the creation of a "network of neighbourhoods," consisting of residential homes, holiday homes available for sale or part ownership, retirement villas, rental cottages, and luxury serviced flats.

The properties would be built across three phases, with around 75 units constructed at each step, similar to the phased ‘Trump Estate’ housing development approved  for the US president’s inaugural Scottish resort at Menie in Aberdeenshire.

Peter Henderson is the SNP leader of the local authority. He told the paper: “The land is not zoned for housing and there are no plans to change the zoning.”
