Statistics exhibit small drop in residential application decisions

New government statistics show that district councils decided 16,100 residential developments between January and March 2018, of which 11,900 were granted – 4 per cent down when compared to the same period a year earlier.

According to the figures, the total number of residential decisions dropped also in the March 2018 quarter compared with the March 2017 quarter, by 4 per cent.

The government’s quarterly release on planning statistics splits this into major and minor residential applications. The number of major residential decisions granted decreased by 4 per cent to 1,700, while the number of minor decisions granted fell to 10,200. For the year ending March 2018, local authorities granted 6,500 major and 42,700 minor residential applications, down 2 per cent on the year ending March 2017.

In January-March 2018, 2,500 decisions were made on applications for commercial developments. Of these 2,300 (91 per cent), were approved. The total number of commercial decisions made decreased by 11 per cent compared with the corresponding quarter in 2017.

In the year to March 2018, 9,900 applications for commercial developments were granted, which is a decrease of 11 per cent compared with the year to March 2017.

District level authorities received 8,700 applications for prior approval for permitted development, 6 per cent less than the same quarter in 2017. According to the statistics, 1,300 applications were for changes to residential use, with 900 approved.

In total in the March quarter, district authorities received 116,700 applications for planning permission, which is 5 per cent less than the same period in 2017. In total for the year ending March 2018, 470,100 planning applications were received, down 3 per cent year on year.

Authorities made 100,400 decisions on planning applications in the first quarter of this year, which is 2 per cent down on 102,500 decisions made in the same quarter a year earlier. Of those decisions, 87,900 were approved.
