Words: Laura Edgar

The Department for Communities and Local Government has announced that Sarah Richards has been appointed as the new chief executive of the Planning Inspectorate.

Richards is currently strategic director of regeneration, housing and resources at Slough Borough Council.

She has been in this post since 2013. She began her career as a planner with the Greater London Council before progressing to director of planning at Test Valley Borough Council.

Richards spent time as the head of the Planning Advisory Service, then moved to Essex County Council for four years as the director for sustainable environment and enterprise and as head of strategic commissioning.

She said: “I am very much looking forward to joining the Planning Inspectorate as the new chief executive. I know what an important job the Inspectorate plays in upholding a fair planning system, helping the country meet its future infrastructure needs and supporting communities to shape where they live.”
