RTPI Cymru welcomes new planning minister

Words: Laura Edgar
Lesley Griffiths

Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones has announced his cabinet team and a new minister with responsibility for planning.

Following the Welsh election on 5 May, Lesley Griffiths AM has been appointed as the cabinet secretary for environment and rural affairs. Griffiths will have responsibility for planning.

Roisin Willmott, director of RTPI Cymru, said: "We look forward to working with Lesley Griffiths at an important time for planning in Wales. The Planning (Wales) Act 2015 is its infancy and needs leadership to implement it successfully, building on the work of the former minister, Carl Sergeant.

“This provides a real opportunity to maximise the potential of the planning system to build sustainable and affordable homes and communities.”

RTPI Cymru will be writing to the new minister to see how the institute can assist in deliver and embedding the legislation.

Before the election, RTPI Cymru published “10 asks” of the government, including coordinating policy by focusing on places and ensuring that planning services have the resources they need.

RTPI Cymru is looking forward to working with the cabinet, particularly Ken Skates, cabinet secretary for economy and infrastructure and Sargeant, who is now cabinet secretary for communities and children. The full list of cabinet secretaries can be found on the Welsh Government website.
