Richmond undertakes village planning process

Words: Laura Edgar

Four Village Planning Guidance Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs) have been commissioned by the London Borough of Richmond to guide future development in the area.

The guidance will focus on East Twickenham, Old Deer Park, St Margaret’s and Richmond.

Nexus Planning will lead the process, alongside architect Broadway Malyan and design consultancy Alan Baxter Associates. The group has previously worked on five SPDs in the borough, two of which have been adopted by the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames Council.

The SPDs will provide a plan for each neighbourhood that identifies the character as well as set out the key policies and design principles that will apply to new development and alterations to existing buildings.

Nexus Planning explained that SPDs do not create new policies, but instead expand on local and national policy.

Associate director and Nexus Planning Matthew Kinghan said: “Each of the villages in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames has its own distinctive character, community and facilities, including many listed buildings and Conservation Areas, so it is important that any new development reflects both the local environment and the aesthetic of the borough as a whole. Using our previous experience, we are looking forward to working with the community to produce a set of four documents which incorporate the aims and wishes of residents but also provide for the future prosperity of the borough.”
