Record number of applications submitted in July

New statistics have shown that 59,000 planning applications were submitted online from across England and Wales in July.
This figure, Planning Portal says, is the highest number submitted in a single month since it began its records in 2005 as the recovery from Covid-19 continues.
Applications are up around 20 per cent on the number submitted in July last year. This follows the pattern reported in the Planning Portal’s Planning Market Insight Report for June.
However, when examined regionally the report shows a more mixed picture.
Type of application | June | July |
Householder and associated consent | 24% | +30% |
Full planning and associated consent | -4% | -4% |
Outline applications | -12% | -8% |
Advertising applications | -60% | -44% |
Prior approval: Development by telecoms operators | 1,837% | +1,456% |
Tree works: Trees in conservation areas/subject to TPOs | 91% | +59% |
The North East performed strongly, with an increase of 38 per cent on the number submitted in the same month last year. London and Wales are showing “the most modest growth”, with an increase of 12 per cent and 11 per cent respectively when compared to 2019 figures.
The Market Insight Report also found that applications from homeowners were 30 per cent higher than usual. Large scale developments are picking up more slowly and are slightly lower than is usual for this time of year.
