Property industry backs neighbourhood proposals

The British Property Federation is backing government moves to make it easier for business improvement districts (BIDs) to take part in business-led neighbourhood plans.

The government is proposing to allow BIDs to become neighbourhood forums to enable them to implement business-led neighbourhood plans.

The federation said business neighbourhoods are a crucial way for companies and landowners to set a planning and development framework to generate growth in their local economies.

“There are many successful BIDs in operation, which have united communities and made significant improvements to the public realm,” said chief executive Melanie Leech.

“Businesses have a crucial part to play in the neighbourhood planning process and it is for this reason that we would like to see steps taken to make it easier for them to participate in neighbourhood planning to ensure that local businesses as well as residents get the opportunity to shape their area.”
