Preston City Council said it will consider carefully the impact of the government's decision to list Preston Bus Station as a building of significant and historical interest.

Last December, the council took an "in principle" decision to demolish the brutalist-style station, which costs £300,000 a year to maintain and needs significant investment estimated at between £17 million and £23 million to bring it up to modern standards.

Culture secretary Ed Vaizey granted the station a Grade II listing after English Heritage described it as "a dramatic building which combines innovation with architectural panache".

Council leader Peter Rankin said the listing was "not the outcome we were hoping for".
