Police to investigate ‘fake’ letters supporting Sully housing scheme

Words: Roger Milne

Letters supporting controversial proposals to build 200 homes on the BP Sports Field at Sully on the South Wales coast may have been faked, planning authority Vale of Glamorgan Council has confirmed.

The local authority has issued a statement explaining that the matter is now in the hands of the police following an internal council audit triggered by a resident’s complaint.

The statement said: “The council took the complaint and the integrity of the planning system seriously and it is for this reason that the matter was investigated and subsequently brought to the attention of the police.”

The hybrid application for up to 200 homes, sporting facilities and a touring caravan facility at the 15-hectare site, was recommended for refusal by officers when it was considered at yesterday’s planning committee meeting (3 November).

The planning committee supported the recommendation and refused the application.

The scheme, put forward by developers St Modwen and the Sully Sports and Social Club, has divided the local community.
