Planning in England lacks accountability

‘Clear accountability is perceived to be missing’ from the English planning system and consultation is often considered ‘tokenistic’. Democratic safeguards for the strategic planning process should be introduced to address this.

This is just one issue and recommendation identified in Planning 2020, the final report of the Raynsford Review, led by former housing and planning minister Nick Raynsford.

The system does include referendums on neighbourhood plans, but not for any other part of planning, and there isn’t any clear accountability for the strategic plans set out by new devolved partnerships, .....Sign Up or Login to read full article
