Planning for the Future: What you thought about simplifying local plans

Proposals to zone land into growth, renewal and protected categories received mixed responses. Organisations think the plan-led system can be simplified but there are concerns about disenfranchising the local community, a lack of detail on the single sustainable development test and that some circumstances would require bespoke rather than national policies.

In its white paper, Planning for the Future, the government proposes that local plans should be simplified. They should identify three types of land:

  • Growth areas – suitable for substantial development.
  • Renewal areas – suitable for development.
