The planning application for a €600 million ring road for the City of Galway has been submitted to An Bord Pleanála as a Strategic Infrastructure Development (SID).

The proposed 18-kilometre route involves a new bridge and viaduct over the River Corrib and two short tunnels on the city’s east side. The link is a mix of single and dual-carriageway.

The project, officially known as the N6 Galway City Ring Road, is designed to reduce chronic congestion around the city centre by segregating cross-city traffic from more local urban traffic.

Over 40 houses will have to be demolished and another 10 acquired to make way for the scheme.

The Irish Cabinet approved funding for the project early in October, subject to planning approval.
