Pickles overturns Suffolk solar farm approval

Communities secretary Eric Pickles has overturned a planning inspector’s decision to grant planning permission for Lark Energy’s proposed 24MW solar farm at Ellough, Suffolk.

The move follows the developer’s successful appeal against Waveney District Council’s refusal to allow the project. However, Pickles has refused planning permission arguing that the increase in the amount of renewable energy generated by the scheme did not outweigh the additional harm caused to the character and appearance of the area.

The council had previously granted planning permission for a 14MW solar farm on the same site. Although Pickles acknowledged that the appeal scheme would generate a greater amount of renewable energy, he felt that the fact “should not automatically override environmental protections and the planning concerns of local communities”.
