Oxford Street bus services to fall by 40%

Words: Huw Morris

Bus services on London’s Oxford Street are to be slashed by 40 per cent this summer as part of a long-term plan to cut congestion and tackle air pollution.

Transport for London (TfL) is redirecting 23 routes away from the capital’s main shopping street with the termini for some services shifting to Park Lane, Trafalgar Square and Tottenham Court Road.

TfL said bus demand on Oxford Street is changing as people opt for different travel modes including cycling and walking. The opening of the Elizabeth Line (Crossrail) in late 2018 will further transform how people travel across central London.

London mayor Sadiq Khan will shortly launch a further consultation, including pedestrianising the street.
