Northern Powerhouse minister quits

Words: Huw Morris
Lord O'Neill

The Treasury minister responsible for the Northern Powerhouse has abruptly resigned.

Lord O’Neill, who received a peerage and was appointed by ex-chancellor George Osborne last year with responsibility for the Northern Powerhouse, has stepped down as commercial secretary and resigned the Conservative whip.
He will now sit in the Lords as a crossbencher.

Accepting O’Neill’s resignation, Prime Minister Theresa May praised his “significant contribution to driving forward the government’s work on delivering growth beyond the South-East through the Northern Powerhouse”.

Osborne last week said there had been a “wobble” in support for the Northern Powerhouse after May entered 10 Downing Street.
