A major public consultation has been launched on a masterplan to regenerate North Shields.

The draft Ambition for North Shields and Fish Quay masterplan, by North Tyneside Council, follows feedback from residents, partners, investors and local businesses and sets out proposals for a “small, vibrant and connected town centre”.

The masterplan aims to combine living, working and retail to transform the town centre into a family-friendly destination and connecting it to the increasingly popular Fish Quay. This would be supported by public transport improvements, walking and cycling connections as well as enhanced public spaces to host events and festivals.

The masterplan outlines nine separate projects, including enhancing the appearance of key areas, creating a  transport hub and interchange and town square to host events, markets and performances, improved walking and cycling routes as well as a new cultural quarter and riverside walkway linking the town centre to Fish Quay.

“We’re a council that has always been about ambition and these draft proposals for North Shields are no different,” said North Tyneside’s deputy mayor Bruce Pickard. “Our bold plans are aimed at creating somewhere people want to live, work and spend their leisure time.”
