In June 2021, 63,873 planning applications in England and Wales were submitted to the Planning Portal – 17 per cent more than the number lodged in June 2020.

The figure is similar to the number submitted in May 2021, 63,497. May’s figures were slightly lower than the Planning Portal expected and “so it seems possible that this is simply a flattening of the usual curve”, which is attributed to the number of working days in the relevant months which fluctuate each year.

Planning Market Insight Report: July 2021 notes that the June 2021 year-on-year increase of 17 per cent is less than the May 2021 year-on-year increase of 52 per cent.

The report explains: “This narrowing of the percentage increase between the same month year on year is, however, unsurprising as last June was the beginning of the uptick in application numbers.”

The Planning Portal expects this year to revert to the pre-Covid-19 pattern after numbers “swelled” following the first lockdown.

Every region saw an increase in applications submitted. The North East continues to see the “strongest recovery” in percentage terms, recording a 26 per cent increase in submissions compared with June 2020. In London and Wales, submissions increased by 24 per cent.

The regions performing below the 17 per cent baseline were the West Midlands (11 per cent), Yorkshire and the Humber (12 per cent), the South West (14 per cent), and the North West (14 per cent).

The report notes: “Whilst the percentages vary slightly across the country, it is also worth noting that the volumes submitted in each region vary greatly – from nearly 13,000 applications in June in both London and the South East, to as few as 1,500 in the North East.”

Sarah Chilcott, managing director at Planning Portal, noted in the report that 387,427 applications have been submitted so far this year.

“We have certainly seen far greater numbers of submissions than in previous years, with March alone realising the highest ever with over 77,200 applications submitted in a single month. However, relative to the seasonal trends depicted over previous years, submissions are seeming to follow a similar pattern.”
