Natural England launches newts protection scheme

Great crested newts

Natural England has announced a district-level licensing scheme in Yorkshire that seeks to conserve local populations of great crested newts while promoting sustainable development.

The scheme will protect great crested newts, which have been declining over the past 60 years, using conservation payments from developers to create new ponds for the newts to join up with the isolated populations. So far, 37 ponds have been created or restored for the newts, with hundreds more to be added across Yorkshire. The scheme has been launched across seven local authorities in........
