A masterplan has been submitted to Fife Council for a major development to the west of St Andrews, designed to provide more than 1,000 new homes, 30 per cent of which will be affordable housing.

Behind the scheme is the St Andrews West LLP, a partnership made up of the University of St Andrews, Headon Holdings and other local landowners.

The 90-hectare site is proposed for a mix of residential, university, business, education, local retail and community uses as well as associated infrastructure.

The scheme will dovetail with plans for a replacement for Madras College at Langlands, and a new link road from the A91 to the edge of the proposed school site.

The proposals are in line with the local planning strategy in TAYplan 2, which designates the location as a strategic development area.

The masterplan states that much of the housing will be around a neighbourhood centre. There are proposals for eight hectares of employment use as well as the provision of 10 hectares for research and development, which could involve a science park. A care home is also planned.
