Major student housing projects get the go-ahead in Belfast

Words: Roger Milne

Almost 1,200 student rooms have been given the green light in Belfast.

Belfast City Council voted that two developments in the city centre should go ahead.

These are a 682-bedroom project in York Street by UK firm UniCiti, and an 11-storey management student building with 475 rooms in Great Patrick Street.

However, three other schemes were refused. These included outline planning permission for a large 408-bedroom development close to Library Street. Planners said the scale was unacceptable.

Outline planning for a development at Carrick Hill was also turned down, along with a small 21-bedroom conversion to student accommodation close to the Central Library.
