Two major hotel schemes were approved this week – one in Newtownabbey and the other, against the advice of officials, in Portrush.

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council approved the former project, a £13 million hotel and office complex, on Monday. The 100-bedroom hotel and separate three-storey office block is earmarked for a site next to the Valley Leisure Centre on Church Road, Rathcoole.

Originally, the proposals included a cinema, which was dropped after local objections.

Meanwhile, a new £6.6 million, 87-bedroom hotel in Portrush has been given the go-ahead. Members of Causeway Coast and Glens Council dismissed concerns raised by officials that the demolition of the listed former Londonderry Hotel for the new building would threaten the historic character of the town centre.

The Department for Communities Historic Environment Division has yet to determine whether the proposed demolitions can proceed.
