Outline proposals for a 100-bedtoom luxury hotel and spa at Rostrevor, in the foothills of the Mourne Mountains, have been recommended for approval by officials at Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

A scheme with half the number of bedrooms was approved by the planning authority in 2011 after objections by planners to an original l00-bedroom proposal. That permission has now lapsed.

The 14-hectare site is in a rural area within the Mournes and Slieve Croob Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The location is also close to two listed properties and an 18th century designated landscape on the Register of Historic Parks.

The setting is heavily wooded. The development will enjoy spectacular views over Carlingford Lough.

The Historic Environment Division (HED) of the Department for Communiities originally voiced concerns about the scheme’s impact on the nearby listed buildings and historic parkland, but now says the proposals are “acceptable” subject to conditions.
