Business secretary Andrea Leadsom has granted planning permission for a South Wales gas-fired power station that would generate up to 299 megawatts.

The £90 million Abergelli Power Project, backed by energy developer Drax, will be sited near the village of Felindre, north of Swansea and would supply up to 150,000 homes.

Leadsom granted a development consent order (DCO) following a recommendation by the Planning Inspectorate. The DCO will allow “the compulsory acquisition of freehold and temporary possession of land” sought by Drax.

The scheme is the 77th nationally significant infrastructure project to be determined by the Planning Inspectorate – 51 of them energy schemes.
