Khan announces his deputy mayor for planning

Words: Laura Edgar
Sadiq Khan and Jules Pipe

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has appointed Jules Pipe CBE as his deputy mayor for planning, regeneration and skills.

Pipe will work on major regeneration projects across the capital, providing young people with skills for their future careers and ensuring London’s infrastructure needs are delivered, Khan said.

He will lead on the revision of the London Plan as well working closely with the deputy mayor for housing and residential development, James Murray, to tackle the city’s housing crisis.

Pipe became the first directly elected Mayor of Hackney in 2002 and has served as the chair of London Councils since June 2010. He will stand down from both these roles next month, when he will start full time at City Hall.

Pipe said: "It is vital we use all the levers of City Hall to pursue a vision for the capital that delivers all its key needs, including a much needed increase in housing, and that development is planned to provide the widest benefit. Young Londoners must be given the skills needed to access all the opportunities available to them in our great city.

“I will be keen to ensure that the London Plan in particular reflects these core priorities.”

Khan said he and Pipe “share a determination to ensure London’s prosperity is shared by all Londoners, and that we plan ahead to equip the city for its future economic, infrastructure, skills and housing needs”.

The RTPI will be writing to Pipe to congratulate him on his appointment.

Andrew Dorrian, chair of RTPI London, said: “RTPI London looks forward to working with him and the Mayor’s team to increase the delivery of homes across London, a key priority for the Mayor and one of RTPI London’s key asks prior to the Mayoral election. We need to empower local authorities and other public sector bodies to help solve London’s housing crisis.  The undersupply is particularly challenging and we look forward to engaging with the Mayoral team and the Greater London Authority to understand how challenges can be overcome.”
