Proposals by Norwegian energy company Statkraft for a 40-turbine wind farm in the Irish Sea advanced this week.

North Irish Sea Array Wind Farm Ltd (NISA), a wholly owned subsidiary of Statkraft, has applied for a foreshore licence to carry out marine surveys of a 229 square-kilometre site located between 7 kilometres and 17km off the coasts of counties Dublin, Louth, and Meath.

If developed, the 500-megawatt array would have the capacity to power approximately 500,000 homes with renewable electricity.

Should the project get the go-ahead, the surveys would start in the summer of 2020 with a geophysical survey and run until 2024, when the final geotechnical campaigns and the engineering are completed.
