Huge onshore wind farm blocked by An Bord Pleanála

Words: Roger Milne

An Bord Pleanála has refused permission for Element Power Ireland’s proposed 47-turbine Maighne wind farm.

The scheme generated considerable local opposition and was treated by the planning agency as a strategic infrastructure project.

The board said the 125 megawatt array straddling the border between County Kildare and County Meath was premature, pending the adoption of either a national wind energy strategy or more local spatial strategies for the areas concerned.

The board was also unhappy with the widely dispersed cluster-based layout, which would have meant a disproportionately large visual envelope, and proximity to many areas of both residential and heritage sensitivity. It also meant there would be a need for extensive underground cabling in an area characterised by poor-quality minor roads.

It concluded that the development would be “contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area”.
