Proposals for a major new €400 million data centre in County Clare are due to be submitted early next year, according to media reports.

The 92,903 square metre facilities would be the largest in the west of Ireland since the ill-starred project planned by Apple for Athenry, County Galway.

The scheme is earmarked for a site on the Tulla Road on the outskirts of Ennis, close to the M18. Clare County Council has been in talks with the company involved for around a year and the planning application will be lodged by Dublin-based firm Art Data Centres Ltd.

Liam Conneally, the council's director of economic development, described the project as “a game changer” with the prospect of around 200 permanent jobs.

The next step is for councillors to vary the development plan to rezone the lands to allow an application to be lodged with An Bord Pleanála next year.
