HS2 phase 1 opening delayed until 2031

HS2 chairman Allan Cook has advised the Department for Transport that it would be ‘more prudent’ to plan for an opening of phase 1 of the project between 2028 and 2031, rather than 2026.

Current schedules would suggest that it “would be prudent to plan on opening phase 2b within a range of 2035 to 2040”, according to the chairman’s stocktake. Phase 2b will run between Manchester and Leeds.

The document suggests that phase 1 would open first, between Old Oak Common in London and Birmingham’s Curzon Street station, with services to London Euston to follow later.
