High street permitted developments ‘fly in face of democracy’

The RTPI has warned that permitted development rights for high streets and height extensions ‘fly in the face of democracy’, and put quality and affordability at risk.

Consultations on the government’s proposals were confirmed in the 2018 Budget. The permitted development rights would see commercial premises and residential properties extended upwards, and allow commercial buildings to be demolished and replaced with homes without applicants going through the full planning process.
