Guildford Borough Council has granted planning permission for a student accommodation scheme on the site of Guildford’s former technical and construction school.

Developer Future Generation, a Southern Grove company, starts work on the scheme in 2019, with completion expected in time for the 2021 academic year.

Guilden Park will comprise 527 bedrooms, Future Generation’s “signature sky lounge” and, through a partnership with Les Mills, an on-demand fitness boutique.

The developers said the scheme would feature the Samsung’s latest technology, owing to a deal with the firm. Students will benefit from air conditioning, virtual reality headsets and a Samsung LED cinema screen.

Andrew Southern, chairman at Future Generation, said: “There has long been a crisis in the provision of student housing in Guildford. Rents in the private sector are among the highest in the country with demand far outstripping supply.

“Our scheme will provide the much-needed increase in quality student accommodation in Guildford as highlighted in the recent University of Surrey Students’ Union ‘Living at the Limit’ campaign.”

Future Generation is a joint venture between Southern Grove and Tadhamon Capital.
