Green light for Waterford city centre retail scheme

Words: Roger Milne

A new shopping development in the centre of Waterford city has been approved by An Bord Pleanála.

This followed third-party appeals into Newgate Properties Ltd’s proposals, which had been backed by Waterford City and County Council.

The development, earmarked for land at St Stephens’ Street and New Street, includes a four-storey car park, a 10,030 square metre shopping centre and a 635 square metre cafe/restaurant area. Up to 250 jobs could be created during construction.

There will be 385 car-parking spaces and a pedestrian bridge over New Street linking the multistorey car park to the shopping area.

A new landscaped urban garden is being provided at the old St Stephen’s graveyard, a protected structure, and a 17th-century house is being retained.

Much of the site for the development is currently occupied by derelict industrial buildings.
