Green light for major NI social housing scheme

Words: Roger Milne

Approval for nearly 200 units of social housing in Derry has been welcomed by Northern Ireland's environment minister Mark H Durkan.

This major scheme involving 197 new homes is earmarked for lands at Galliagh, south of Skeoge Link Road and adjacent to the Lower Galliagh Road.

The proposals involve a mix of housing types, including one- and two-bedroom flats as well as two-, three- and four-bedroom housing.

There will be a mix of single- to three-storey dwellings, predominately semi-detached, with some small scale terrace rows.

The scheme will include open space provision as required under the master plan for the area and incorporate a bus route.

The application was initially made by Dingles Ltd. However, the Apex Housing Association acquired the site and became the applicant last May.

In a separate but related development, Apex has unveiled plans for an 80-home social housing development plus a community centre at the Glen area of the city.
