A major development in north west Belfast, of 653 new homes comprising a mix of social and affordable units, has been given the go-ahead by the city council.

The proposals also include a retail and community hub, a business park, a hotel, two care homes and two wastewater treatment plants.

The mixed-use development, proposed by the Braidwater Group, is earmarked for a site in the Glenmona area of the capital west of the Monagh By-Pass.

Planning permission was also granted for a number of other residential developments in the city. These included approval for 151 flats on land adjacent to Quay Gate House at Scrabo Street and two three storey buildings with 27 flats, on a site overlooking the Connswater River, south of Lewis Park/Mews.
