Government should take planning system ‘more seriously’

A new National Audit Office (NAO) report has found that the government’s planning system is ‘underperforming’ and unable to demonstrate how it can deliver 300,000 homes a year by the mid-2020s.

The NAO acknowledges that the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has implemented reforms to the planning system to help English local authorities determine how many homes are required, what type and where they should be.

But MHCLG cannot demonstrate that it is meeting housing demand effectively.
