General election 2019: Labour promises 100,000 new council houses a year by 2024 and a Green Industrial Revolution

The Labour Party calls its ‘manifesto of hope’, published ahead of the general election on 12 December, the ‘most radical and ambitious plan to transform our country in decades’ and promises ‘a green transformation’ of the economy.

It is, says the party, “our last chance to tackle the climate emergency”.

The manifesto sets out plans for a windfall tax on oil companies and renationalisation of rail, mail, water and energy.

Among headline pledges is the biggest affordable housebuilding programme since the 1960s, including 100,000 new council houses a year by 2024.
