Funds awarded for digital innovation

Words: Huw Morris

A digital technology project under development by five local authorities to improve efficiency in the planning system is one of seven initiatives to receive government funding.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s local digital fund has awarded up to £100,000 to each of the research and development projects, which aim to adapt or improve public services.

The project, which has received £98,500, is led by the London Borough of Lambeth with Wycombe District Council as well as the London boroughs of Southwark, Lewisham and Camden. It is looking to develop a digital system to limit the number of incomplete or invalid digital planning applications.

Other projects to be awarded funding include predicting demand in children’s social care, processing revenue and benefits data and enabling better information sharing to drive improvements in local services.
