Durkan grants permission for childcare facility

Words: Huw Morris

Northern Ireland environment minister Mark H Durkan today announced planning permission for a purpose-built childcare facility in Newtownbreda.

Mencap NI will run the facility in a two-storey building which will include a ground floor nursery as well as associated administration meeting accommodation.
Durkan said the approval was in line with his commitment to prioritise development proposals which bring infrastructural and social improvements. The application was turned around within six months, meeting government targets for large scale investment.
"This new Mencap community hub and childcare facility will provide care and therapy to children with learning disabilities or a developmental delay, and their family," Durkan added. "The hub will also benefit the local community by offering accessible and flexible space for daytime and evening meetings and represents an invaluable community asset."
