Derelict Rhondda site earmarked for 172 homes

Words: Roger Milne

The redevelopment of a derelict site of a former fire extinguisher factory in the Rhondda Valley has been recommended for approval by planners at the Rhondda Cynon Taff Borough Council.

The site, on the Maerdy Industrial Estate at Ferndale, has remained empty since Chubb moved its manufacturing to China 12 years ago.

Garrison Barclay Estates Ltd proposes to demolish existing structures and replacement them with a mixed-use development of up to 172 new homes and around 2,000 square metres of commercial, retail and employment floor space. Plans also include landscaping and public realm provision.

Officials said the development was “on balance considered acceptable given the ongoing dereliction at the site. The proposal represents a marked improvement over earlier proposals for the site in terms of access, mix of uses and layout and will sit more comfortably with existing land uses in and around the site than earlier proposals”.
