Proposals for a £30 million motor racing circuit in County Tyrone look dead and buried after local media reports revealed that the entire site near Coalisland has been placed on the market by receivers.

The 73-hectare Lake Torrent site had been the focus of a bid to create a new World Superbike Championship circuit in Northern Ireland.

The proposals were approved two years ago by Mid Ulster District Council, subject to conditions. They involved a range of community and leisure facilities including a crèche, medical centre and restaurants, alongside a new public ring road, and a technology and business park.

The most problematic condition for the company behind the project, Manna Developments, centred on a coal mine risk assessment for the 70-plus abandoned shafts dating back to the historic coal and fire clay mining activities at the site, formerly known as the ‘clay pits‘.
