Class of 92 campus plan wins approval

Words: Huw Morris

A proposal backed by the ‘Class of 92’ Manchester United stars to transform the former Kellogg’s building in Stretford into a university campus has secured planning permission.

University Academy 92 (UA92), backed by Gary Neville, his brother Phil, and Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes, aims to cater for students seeking careers in media, business and sport.

It will operate as a branch of Lancaster University and will target students who might not otherwise go into further education as well as those looking for a “broader formative experience”.

UA92 is a partnership between the players, Trafford Council, Lancaster University, Microsoft, developer Brentwood and Trafford College. The initiative aims to contribute to the council’s “no one held back, no one left behind” vision, as well as its priorities for economic growth and development.

UA92 is also a key part of Trafford Council’s £170 million Stratford masterplan, which includes proposals to redevelop part of Stretford Mall and bring the grade II listed art deco Essoldo cinema back into use.
