Members of Clare County Council have agreed to amend the county development plan and re-zone land for a new €400 million data centre on the outskirts of Ennis.

The planned 929,000 square metre facility is earmarked for a 51-hectare site close to the Tulla Road junction of the M18 motorway. The site is being designated as an enterprise zone that will be data centre-specific.

The project is set to be the largest in the west of Ireland since the cancelled 18,580 sq m centre planned by Apple for Athenry.

A planning application is expected to be lodged shortly with An Bord Pleanála by Dublin-based Art Data Centres Ltd.

The local authority estimates that the scheme will generate over 1,000 construction jobs and lead to 200 permanent posts at the data-centre.
