Caerphilly development makes waves

Words: Roger Milne

Proposals for a 685-home, mixed-use scheme and bypass on land to the south-east of Caerphilly on the lower slopes of Caerphilly Mountain face significant opposition from local residents.

The project, earmarked for the former Ness Tar Plant and adjoining land, includes some three hectares of employment and proposals for leisure activities. It is included in the council’s proposed updated local development plan.

Planning officials insist that the location is a sustainable and that the site can realise significant benefits in terms of providing housing and the remediation of one of the county borough’s more contaminated sites.

Bu campaigners say the proposals represent over-development and would destroy green areas of the town.
