Budget 2020: Government vows to increase tree planting and establish carbon storage sites

The government will plant enough trees to ‘cover an area the size of Birmingham’, according to chancellor Rishi Sunak, as he outlined his first Budget.

“Over the next five years, we will plant around 30,000 hectares of trees – that’s a forest larger than Birmingham – and restore 35,000 hectares of peatland,” he said.

The clean growth and environmental protection measures in the Budget come as the UK prepares to host the 2020 COP26 UN climate summit.
