Boost for Ballymena jobs in prospect

Words: Roger Milne

Four major investors have already signalled interest in developing the 16-hectare site formerly owned by Wrightbus which has now been transferred to the people of Ballymena via the local authority, Mid & East  Antrim Borough Council.

So far, the companies have suggested schemes involving the education, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing sectors.
Council chief executive, Anne Donagh told elected members at this week’s full council meeting she was encouraged by the variety of proposals suggested for the land at Lisnafillan.

The mayor, councillor Peter Johnston, said: “These lands will be crucial in securing more jobs for our people and the growth of our economy".

The land is understood to be worth around £700,000. The transfer was held up due to negotiations over conditions, including a stipulation that the land would not be used for housing, but must instead be used to further economic development.
