Better land management can lessen climate change effects

Improving how land is managed can contribute to tackling climate change alongside work to cut greenhouse gas emissions, shows the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report.

As the Earth’s temperature rises the risk of droughts, soil erosion and wildfires is increasing, crop yields in the tropics are diminishing and permafrost near both poles is thawing, states the report.

Degraded land is less productive, which means that what can be grown there is restricted and therefore the soil’s ability to absorb carbon is undermined.
