Belfast City Council is ‘supportive’ of proposals for a 480-megawatt gas-fired power plant in the capital, the planning authority told The Planner this week.

Power company Evermore Energy wants to build the power plant on land adjoining Airport Road West on the Belfast Harbour Estate. The scheme has a price tag of £250 million.

The new facility would require an underground pipeline connection to the existing gas transmission infrastructure at Kinnegar Barracks.

The company has submitted a planning application to the Department for Infrastructure which has requested comments from the city council on what is a regionally significant development.

Most of the application falls within the area administered by Belfast City Council, but some of the scheme is in the area administered by the Ards and North Down Borough Council at Kinnegar.

The project was discussed at this week’s city council planning committee meeting.
