Anglesey Enterprise Zone expands

Words: Roger Milne

The boundaries of Anglesey Enterprise Zone are to be extended to maximise economic benefits for the region and will include a marine renewable energy zone and the Menai Science Park site.

Economy minister Edwina Hart said this week that the new sites include the West Anglesey Demonstration Zone, a 37 square kilometre area of seabed off the west coast of Anglesey, and Cefn Du, the 21 hectare site in Gaerwen earmarked for the Menai Science Park.

She said: “Both locations have the potential to make a significant long-term contribution to the local and regional economy and gaining Enterprise Zone status will make these sites particularly attractive propositions for investment and job creation.

“There is also clearly an opportunity for the Menai Science Park to assist in facilitating benefits to Anglesey and North Wales from the huge investments expected at Wylfa Newydd.”

The extension of the Enterprise Zone boundaries will support the drive to ensure that Anglesey is at the forefront of the latest renewable energy developments.

The West Anglesey Demonstration Zone has already been designated by the Crown Estate for the development of up to 10 renewable tidal power installations with a total cumulative production capacity of 120 megawatts.
